Post Your Movie For Free

You should think about why you make movies. If the answer is anything other than "I just like making movies", I want you to read something.

I've tried several times to re-post an article from Ted Hope's blog about "7 Reasons To Release Your Film For Free" and the link failed me.

Hopefully, the link works now - then you should read it. Not necessarily to agree with it, but to think about it.

As I read the article, I am reminded that the FREE DISTRIBUTION debate goes two ways:
 - How can I make my money back/for the next movie?
 - Why do I have to wait for other people to put out my movie?

And I thought to myself, maybe I know what I'm talking about. Because you see, those don't have to be competing ideas. Those should be intertwined thoughts.

In our ever growing world of interconnectedness between audiences and media makers, the idea of anyone coming between filmmakers and their audience is disturbing to the future of film.

Filmmakers should be delivering their work to their audience. Using their work and their audience to find ways to support this work and the next work and the next.

Why should you give your movie away? To grow your audience, to give them your work for their support, to give them reason to help you make the next movie.

As an audience, we have to remember how we support filmmakers. Buy a DVD to support the last film. Participate in a Kickstarter/IndieGoGo campaign for the next film. Tell your friends to continue the cycle.

Sure, I paid to see THE AVENGERS twice. I also bought a DVD of my friend Amy Sherber's film MY GRANDFATHER WAS A NAZI SCIENTIST. I have donated to friends Kickstarter campaigns - David Smith's LADYBEARD and Elaine McMillion's HOLLOW.

Think about how you're spending your dollars. Then Free can be worth it.
